GM Adds Former State Budget Director to Economic Development Role

David Massaron

General Motors went with a familiar face when it picked its new chief economic development and real estate officer.

GM chose former Michigan budget director David Massaron for the role, which began for him Jan. 2.

Massaron comes to GM from his former position as Wayne State University’s chief business officer, chief financial officer and treasurer for the university’s board of governors. He reports to Craig Glidden, GM’s executive vice president for legal, policy and cybersecurity.

He was Michigan’s budget director after having served in several capacities for the City of Detroit, including chief financial officer, chief operating officer and senior counsel to Mayor Mike Duggan. He started his legal career at Dickinson Wright and was later principal at Miller Canfield from 2007 to 2014.

“David’s unique experience serving in Michigan across the State, City of Detroit and the private sector will be invaluable to the work GM is doing in our hometown and across the many communities where we live and work,” Glidden said in a statement, according to the Detroit News.

Massaron is board chair of Detroit Equity Inc., and serves on the board of directors for the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Downtown Detroit Partnership.

Massaron, a native of Detroit, has a bachelor’s degree in political theory and constitutional democracy from the James Madison College at Michigan State University and a law degree from William & Mary Law School.
