Beyond Basics at the forefront of the literacy movement in the state of Michigan

Literacy nonprofit Beyond Basics has attained the support of Congressman Bill Huizenga who represents Michigan’s 4th Congressional District to introduce H.Res.738 in support of literacy.

The resolution highlights the need for state and local government agencies to ensure every student is provided with a proven literacy curriculum to get all students reading at grade level or better. Since its introduction, U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Jack Bergman (MI-01), and Hillary Scholten (MI-03) have also signed on as Cosponsors.

For two decades, Beyond Basics has steadfastly employed a structured literacy curriculum utilizing phonics and decoding strategies to elevate children’s reading skills to grade level proficiency or beyond. Their proven methodology, underpinned by intensive tutoring, has received validation through a recent Longitudinal Study, offering a promising solution to combat illiteracy. The acquisition of literacy equips students to realize their educational aspirations and evolve into thriving members of the workforce.

“This report confirms what we have long recognized – that students possess tremendous potential when provided with the necessary support,” remarked Pamela Good, co-founder, and CEO of Beyond Basics.

In recent times, over thirty-two states have enacted legislation mandating the adoption of The Science of Reading as the standard reading curriculum. Michigan is among the growing number of states championing evidence-based structured literacy interventions for students.

“Illiteracy is a challenge that can be overcome,” asserts Pamela Good. “This resolution addressing literacy marks a significant initial stride towards a future in which students can access education, graduate, and pursue opportunities in higher education and the workforce.”
