President Trump declares national emergency

President Donald Trump announced in a news conference Friday he’s declaring a national emergency to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

In a speech delivered in the Rose Garden, the president said he was declaring the emergency to “unleash the full power of the federal government.”

He said the declaration allows him to deliver some $50 billion to state and local governments, calling the effort part of our “shared fight against this disease.”

Surrounded by members of his coronavirus task force, Trump said “no resource would be spared.”
