The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) Detroit Chapter will host a panel discussion on diversity in the age of globalism. The conversation will be led by the region’s leading advocates on the topic of diversity. The event takes place on Wednesday, October 18 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm at the Oloman Café located at 10215 Joseph Campau Ave., Hamtramck, MI.

The Association for Women in Communications Detroit Chapter will host a panel discussion featuring the “Masters of Inclusion” notable professionals who have risen to local and national prominence for their skills and passion in leading and communicating to advance diversity and inclusion.

“This is a timely and important topic of conversation,” says chapter president, Deniella Ortiz-Lalain. “Embracing diversity in the workplace and our communities is far from simple and takes great patience. However, it can bring great rewards. As communicators, we need to learn how to communicate more effectively with diverse audiences and use the power of communication to turn diversity into inclusion”,

Facilitating the panel discussion is Indira Sadikovic, director of corporate communications for German-based Freudenberg North America. She is responsible for distributing clear communications that consistently pass the test of ethnic, racial and intercontinental sensitivities.

Indira and husband Zlatan Sadikovic own the Oloman Cafe where the event will be held. The café was named for their favorite gathering spot in Sarajevo, Bosnia, which was destroyed by war in the early 1990s. Today the Oloman Café is a favorite local gathering place and serves as a welcoming beacon for community.
Also featured on the panel are Mayor Karen Majewski of Hamtramck, Kim Trent of Michigan Futures and Calvin Moore, owner of Seven Point Two Tours. Mayor Majewski currently faces the most challenging time in her Hamtramck administration with an upcoming election, balancing 24 distinct cultures, and an economy subsisting on small retail stores. Majewski holds a strong personal definition of what it means to be an American in an age of globalism.

Kim Trent leads Michigan Futures, Inc., a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to make Michigan a world class, knowledge driven economic force. Trent has worked for three leading female politicians, Senator Debbie Stabenow, former Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and former Governor Jennifer Graham. She was previously a writer for the Detroit News and other publications on the topics of politics and race.
Calvin Moore is owner and lead tour guide at Seven Point Two Tours, named for the 7.2 square miles of Downtown Detroit. Seven Point Two Tours provides education and tools to help better understand and enjoy Detroit. He also hosts a weekly podcast called Leading Questions with Calvin Moore that explores difficult questions about our own beliefs and society.

The program will be held on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017 at the Oloman Café located at 10215 Joseph Campau Ave., Hamtramck, MI. Registration begins at 5:30 pm, with a light supper at 6:00 pm. The program commences at 6:45 pm. Cost is $25.00 for AWC members, $35.00 for future members and $15.00 for students and recent graduates.

Special thanks to Lawrence Technological University’s master of science program in Technical and Professional Communication for sponsoring this event.
