The Association for Women in Communications Detroit Chapter turns its focus to those who expose racketeering, terrorism and fraud and on ways to put the worst element behind bars in a panel discussion with a former U.S. Attorney, a newspaper journalist and an award-winning producer.

Headlining the panel discussion is Barbara L. McQuade, the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Now a UM law professor, she helped convict Kwame Kilpatrick, former Detroit mayor of racketeering; prosecuted Dr. Farid Fata, the doctor who overtreated and lied to hundreds of cancer patients; and sent to jail Al Qaida operative Umar Aarouk Abdulmallab, the underwear bomber.

McQuade oversaw cases involving public corruption, terrorism, corporate fraud, theft of trade secrets, civil rights and health care fraud, among others. Her vigilant pursuit of justice and fairness helped earn recognition from media outlets, the NAACP and the Arab American Civil Rights League.

Our second panelist, Detroit Free Press court reporter Tresa Baldas covered Kwame Kilpatrick; the gynecologist performing genital mutilation on teens; cyberbullies; human trafficking and the Pokémon Go trial. She weighs justice issues, both the public desire to take criminals off the streets and the rights of citizens to a fair trial.

Adding another perspective is nine-time Emmy Award-winning senior producer/host of Michigan Matters, Carol Cain, who covers politics, business, sports and urban affairs for CBS62.

The program will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at CBS-TV Channel 62, 26905 W. 11 Mile Road, Southfield, 48033. Registration begins at 5:30 pm, with a light supper at 6:00 pm. The program commences at 6:45 pm. Cost is $25.00 for AWC members, $35.00 for future members and $15.00 for students and recent graduates. Register here: http://womcomdetroit.org/wic-events/
