Allen-Pettway to Succeed Coulter as CEO at Matrix Human Services

DETROIT – Matrix Human Services, a nonprofit that has led the way in combating poverty in Detroit since 1906, announced that Starr Allen-Pettway will succeed Brad Coulter as the organization’s CEO, effective November 2024.

Coulter, who has served with dedication to residents in Detroit since 2016, will retire later this year.

Allen-Pettway, currently Matrix’s Chief Operating Officer, has been an integral part of the organization, significantly contributing to its mission of empowering Detroit residents toward self-sufficiency.

With a background in child welfare and healthcare, Matrix officials believe Allen-Pettway is prepared to lead Matrix into its next chapter of service and impact.

“Starr Allen-Pettway’s leadership qualities, her deep connection to our mission and her visionary approach to service make her the ideal incoming leader for Matrix,” Coulter said. “She has the sophistication required to run a $60 million-per-year non-profit with over 70 funding streams. Her experience combined with a heartfelt dedication to the community is an invaluable asset for leading Matrix Human Services into the future.”

As COO, Allen-Pettway has been pivotal in enhancing Matrix’s community programs, increasing both scope and effectiveness, and helping thousands of Detroiters each year through education, job training, and support services. Her strategic planning and operational oversight have prepared her well for the organization’s top role.

“I am deeply honored to step into the role of CEO at Matrix Human Services,” Allen-Pettway said. “I look forward to continuing our work, building on our historical foundation, and advancing our mission to transform lives. Together with our committed team, we will push forward to ensure that our community members have the opportunities they need to succeed.”

Matrix Human Services invites the community and all stakeholders to support Ms. Allen-Pettway as she transitions into her new role and to continue their support of Matrix’s mission to eradicate poverty and empower individuals.
