The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) Detroit Chapter and the Detroit Public Library Foundation’s NAHC Trustees will be unveiling their third “Little Free Library” on Saturday, September 22nd at 4 PM at the Lincoln Library located at 1221 East 7 Mile Road in Detroit.

This is a free event and the public is welcome to attend.

The Lincoln unveiling event will be highlighted by the guest appearance of Joe Chasney, storyteller, magician and founder of Joe’s Just Magic. Chasney has delighted audiences for over 20 years with his comic magic and juggling show. His performances have been seen at venues such as Sandals Resorts and Carnival Cruise Lines, the Renaissance Festival, and Meadowbrook Music Festival.

Chasney, who is also a high school English teacher, has a deep passion for books. At the unveiling he will share his personal story of how he learned the craft of magic through books. “Books have a magic of their own,” states Chasney. “Books can be a doorway to adventure. It was through a book that I learned how to perform magic tricks. I remember reading each page over and over until I had mastered the trick. It’s my hope to get others excited about reading. When I heard about what AWC Detroit and the NAHC were doing, I knew I wanted to get involved. This is a great program.”

In addition to viewing the magic show, participating children will be able to choose a book for themselves from over a hundred titles donated by Marygrove College. Richard Kollins, Chair of the Detroit Public Library’s National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) who funded the program, states. “We are very pleased to see this program expand to more branch libraries. By increasing access to books, we hope to drive up literacy rates in the neighborhoods.”

Deniella Ortiz-Lalain, president of AWC Detroit states, “We are thrilled to see volunteers outside our membership become involved with this program. It is gratifying to see increased neighborhood involvement at the local branch library. If a child can fall in love with a book, they will be a reader the rest of their lives.”

The Detroit Public Library Foundation’s NAHC Trustees and the Association for Women in Communications (AWC) Detroit Chapter have partnered to promote literacy. They are collaborating to help increase literacy rates within Detroit by increasing engagement with local branch libraries.
