Southfield, Mich. — A 90th anniversary celebration for Council Re|Sale (3297 Twelve Mile Road, Berkley, MI 48072), one of the oldest resale shops in metro Detroit, will be held on Sunday, June 22 at 2.30 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El (14450 W. 10 Mile Road, Oak Park, MI 48237) and will feature a silent auction and refreshments, music provided by a student pianist from Berkley High School, accolades for shoppers, donors, volunteers and staff, and recognition of community partner George Nyman, owner of Professional Property Management.
The highlight of the celebration will be a fashion show, modeled by customers, staff, donors, supporters and community members, featuring fashion and accessories from the store. Jay Towers, morning anchor at Fox 2 Detroit and host of Jay Towers in the Morning radio show, will be the emcee. Council Re|Sale is operated by National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan (NCJW|MI) and is known for carrying high-end clothing, including designer wear, jewelry, shoes and household items all donated by the community. “Our store is run by incredible staff and volunteers and in the early years it was run entirely by volunteers which is a major achievement and one which deserves a big celebration,” said NCJW|MI President Amy Zeskind. “Countless beautiful fashion items and home décor have been enjoyed by so many of our loyal customers over the years, always at bargain prices and due to the unending generosity of our donors. When people shop at our store, they are also helping their community because all the proceeds support the many projects we organize to better the lives of women, children and families.”
Council Re|Sale originally opened its doors on Rowena Street in Detroit in 1934 and has been in Berkley since 1990. The store recently expanded into the space next door, adding an additional 4,400 square feet, plus a basement. This expansion now houses the home décor department, the men’s department and has a large donation area. Prior to the expansion there was always a struggle to get donations to the sales floor due to lack of space, both on the shop floor and in the donation sorting space.
Proceeds raised at Council Re|Sale support many important projects. These include the annual Back 2 School Store which provides free clothing and school supplies to 900 Detroit children in need each year, and another program which provides backpacks and school supplies to 1000 homeless children through Oakland Schools Student Education Services plus 500 children in need identified through Jewish Family Service. Other initiatives include literacy outreach, fleece blankets for children in hospitals and in foster care, and Kosher Meals on Wheels. The organization is also at the forefront of voter advocacy and women’s reproductive rights, holding programs and educational initiatives to promote these issues, plus is active in eco-conscious initiatives aimed at protecting the planet.
Sponsorship for the 90th anniversary celebration is available at varying levels: $2,500 Haute Couture; $1,000-2,499 Elegant; $500-999 Chic; and $250-499 Fashionable. Donor levels are also welcome at any amount.
