The Worst Thing That Ever Happened To Me or The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from doing the show “Anything is Possible” on WJR-AM week after week is that oft times in life the worst thing that ever happened to a person ultimately turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to that person.

Chuck Colson was the Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon and went to prison for The Pentagon Papers. While in prison he met God and formed Prison Fellowship, which today consists of 100,000-plus volunteers in 115 countries.

In 1982, Nick Vujicic was born with no arms and no legs. Today he travels the world speaking to young people on each of us having a key role to play in God’s master plan. His is a compelling story of how his life has changed from a life without limbs to a life without limits!

In 1986, Weusi Olusola was the number one rated 16-year-old basketball player in the United States. One summer afternoon while sitting on the steps of a house with a girlfriend, he was mistakenly gunned down in a drug deal gone bad. Being confined to a wheelchair ever since, he has formed Pioneers for Peace, which consists of 24 violence survivors who go into schools and communities to talk about choices, turning the other cheek, drugs, rap music, guns and violence.

Each of these people experienced an awful tragedy and they eventually were able to surrender their life to God. They learned to let God be God, which is one of the hardest things for any of us to do. They overcame the bitterness and forgave God, their perpetrators and/or themselves for what happened to them. Olusola believes that, “Being bitter is like me taking poison in the hope that the other person dies.”

I asked each of them if God came down and offered to undo the tragedy in their life, what would they do? In each case they said they would tell God unequivocally, “No thanks!” They’ve learned and accepted that this is the role God wants them to play in His Master Plan.

I believe that in these challenging economic times we are experiencing that it’s important to remember that with God’s help and prayer we can, and will, get through anything. Whether you’ve just lost a loved one or are fighting through a major illness or you’ve just lost your job, there is still hope. I believe that each of us should work as if everything depended on you and pray as if everything depended on God.

The most commonly used phrase from the Bible is, “Be not afraid.” Chuck, Nick and Weusi teach us that long term all things work out for the best.

I believe that rather than being the host of “Anything is Possible,” I have been the beneficiary by being able to learn from these and may other truly great human beings.

I truly believe that with God, Anything is Possible.
