Spirit Airlines Spurns Frontier Merger Offer

Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines have been talking merger again, Frontier officials said in a press release posted to the airline’s website.

However, officials for Spirit – currently in bankruptcy – reportedly spurned the offer from Frontier, preferring to pursue a bankruptcy exit strategy of their own.

According to reports from multiple outlets, the proposal marks the latest chapter in several years of discussions between the two carriers. In 2022, Spirit shareholders rejected an earlier $2.7 billion merger deal with Frontier in favor of a higher offer from JetBlue, which later collapsed due to antitrust concerns, according to a report from CNN.

A regulatory filing from Spirit on Jan. 29 revealed the two airlines also talked about a potential merger in the summer and fall of 2024.
