SOUTHFIED, Mich. – Council Re|Sale (3297 W. 12 Mile Road in Berkley), one of the oldest resale shops in metro Detroit, will be expanding into the adjacent store, currently occupied by Time Travelers, a comic book, cards, toys and video games store.
The 4,400 square-foot expansion is expected to take place at the end of October and will offer more floor space, additional room for the store’s popular sales and an increased area for donation processing.
Ahead of expansion, the store will hold its annual Fall Showcase event, featuring women’s and men’s fall fashions and accessories at bargain prices, including brands such as Coach, J. Jill, Chico’s, Banana Republic, Lafayette 148, Ralph Lauren, Lisa Todd, Nordstrom, Randi Rahm, Polo, Eileen Fisher, Ecco and Lululemon.
Fall Showcase will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 12:30 to 4 p.m., with a special $25 VIP early entry from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Shoppers interested in VIP Early Entry should pre-register with payment at the store or by calling (248) 548.6664.
Council Re | Sale is operated by National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan and is known for carrying high-end clothing, including designer wear, jewelry, shoes and household items all donated by the community.
In the lead up to Fall Showcase, which has frequently seen lines of shoppers around the building, there will be several door-busting events for previous season merchandise:
- Mon. Sept. 9 and Tuesday Sept. 10 shoppers will be able to purchase all items, including home décor and jewelry, at 90 percent off in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the store
- Wed. Sept 11 there will be a $25 fill-a-bag sale (excluding home décor and jewelry)
- Thurs. Sept 12 to Sat. Sept 14 the store will be closed in preparation for Fall Showcase
“With the expansion of Council Re|Sale we will be able to offer our loyal shoppers even more treasures with larger womens’, mens’ and home décor areas,” explained NCJW|MI President Amy Zeskind. “Having a full basement for storage will improve our ability to bring donations to the sales floor much quicker as we have always been short of floor space due to the generosity of our many donors.”
Zeskind said that the most important part of the expansion was that income from the store would increase, allowing her organization’s many community impact projects to flourish. It is expected that Time Travelers will move to a space across the street and that Council Resale will need to close for a few days in the fall to allow for construction.
Proceeds raised at Council Re|Sale, which was originally opened in 1934 in Detroit, go toward the many community impact projects and social advocacy work which NCJW|MI, a 501(c)(3) organization, run to benefit local families. Recent projects of the 133-year-old organization include the annual Back 2 School Store which provides free clothing and school supplies to 900 Detroit children in need each year, and another program which provides backpacks and school supplies to 1000 homeless children through Oakland Schools Homeless Student Service plus 500 children in need identified through Jewish Family Service.
Other initiatives include literacy outreach, fleece blankets for children in hospitals and in foster care, and Kosher Meals on Wheels. The organization is also at the forefront of voter advocacy and women’s reproductive rights, holding programs and educational initiatives to promote these issues.
Council Re|Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; donations of clothing (not books or children’s clothing currently) are accepted Monday through Saturday, excluding Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on Council Re|Sale go to www.councilresale.net; for more information on National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan go to www.ncjwmi.org
