The National Council of SourceAmerica Employers recently awarded Nancy Bogdan, the senior vice president of JVS Human Services, with their Management Excellence award.
SourceAmerica created the NCSE Management Excellence Award in 2018 to “celebrate individuals who have displayed excellence in leadership in the management of an AbilityOne participating nonprofit agency and significantly advanced employment opportunities for people with disabilities.”
The AbilityOne Commission is an independent federal agency established in 1938 to create job opportunities for the blind and disabled. There are over 500 nonprofits in the program, which work though two designated Central Nonprofit Agencies, one of which is SourceAmerica. SourceAmerica connects the nonprofits they oversee directly to federal customers.
One of these nonprofits is JVS Human Services, located in Southfield. The agency has roots as a women’s employment bureau dating back to 1926, but it was officially founded in 1941 as Jewish Vocational Services.
They worked to find jobs for disabled veterans, war refugees, and Holocaust survivors. Today, they work with senior citizens, the homeless, students, and disabled people. JVS also works directly with employers to help them achieve their hiring goals.
Bogdan heads up JVS’ Community Support Services. This year, she helped JVS provide services to almost 12,000 metro-Detroit residents. In part, under her leadership, the nonprofit assisted more than 1,000 employers seeking job candidates for a variety of positions at various skill levels.
“I am fortunate to work at an organization whose mission is to help individuals with disabilities, a passion of mine since I was young, and have watched how people with disabilities can greatly contribute to society through their work,” said Bogdan. “Some of the individuals with disabilities I’ve had the pleasure of working with through JVS, I’ve known for 30 years; it’s been rewarding to watch them grow, develop, get jobs, apartments, their own pets, and live productive lives in our community when given the opportunity of employment.”
Paul Blatt, President and CEO of JVS, called Bogdan a “leader and exceptional in the management of programs that help individuals with disabilities find rewarding employment.”
“Our community is stronger because of the support, development and guidance she provides our team and the people we serve,” Blatt said.
The award comes with a trophy and $1,000 in SourceAmerica Training Incentive
Vouchers. Bogdan was one of four recipients across the US, the only one from the midwest.
