Statistics show that early talk by President Donald Trump about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. State, his tariff policies as they apply to Canadian goods and uncertainty over his immigration policies are likely affecting U.S. Canadian relations.
Numbers released by Statistics Canada earlier this week show that, for the eighth straight month, road trips to the U.S. by Canadians showed a year-over-year decline in August.
Bloomberg reported that return trips by automobile to Canada from the country’s southern neighbor fell nearly 40% in August from a year ago, Statistics Canada data showed.
Canadian-resident return trips by air from the United States also fell 25.4%, while those from other countries rose 6.6%, according to the Bloomberg report.
The number of car trips to Canada by U.S. residents slid 4.5% last month from a year earlier, a seventh consecutive drop, and air arrivals by U.S. residents fell 3.6%. Arrivals by overseas residents, however, grew 4.6%.
