An accomplished C-Suite executive, broadcast entrepreneur and Detroit neighborhood development champion will be recognized by the Association for Women in Communications Detroit Chapter during Celebrate & Elevate: A Toast to Women in Communications on Wed. June 6, at 5:30 p.m. at WaterMark Bar & Grille in St. Clair Shores.

Denise A. Gray Felder, Chief Communications Officer, Michigan Medicine, will be honored with the 2018 AWC Matrix Headliner Award saluting the outstanding achievements of a prominent AWC Detroit Chapter member. She will receive her award and deliver the keynote acceptance speech, “Leaders Who Win: Bringing & Keeping Your Authentic Self” during the AWC Celebrate & Elevate event.

Gray-Felder has exhibited exceptional leadership throughout her career – as the youngest and first black president to lead both the AWC Detroit Chapter and the national Association for Women in Communications, to advancing the marketing communications impact at the world-renowned Michigan Medicine. As Chief Communications Officer, Gray-Felder leads a team of 40 healthcare marketing professionals at the academic medical center of the University of Michigan, comprising three hospitals and 40 outpatient centers.

As founding president of the Communication for Social Change Consortium, Gray-Felder worked globally to help people in poor communities amplify their voices to influence change. She is most proud of her 18-year passionate effort convincing the world that an AIDS vaccine is essential to managing this chronic illness. Gray-Felder divides her nonworking time between Ann Arbor and New Jersey.

Robin Kinnie, founder and CEO of Motor City Woman, is the 2018 Matrix Diamond Award recipient for supporting women entrepreneurs through her internet-based radio station and broadcasting/recording studio. The Diamond Award recognizes communications and programs that advocate for improving the image and well-being of women in society. Motor City Woman offers expert-led discussions and resources that help entrepreneurs grow their businesses. She launched the Detroit Chapter of Soundgirls.org, a national organization focused on increasing the number of women audio engineers.

Jackie Berg, founder and owner of Bridges Communications Group, will receive the 2018 Matrix Vanguard Award, honoring an individual or organization for innovatively employing a communications medium. When it comes to uplifting urban communities in Flint and Detroit, Berg goes the distance. Following 25 years of heading city, state and national minority media organizations, she launched print and online editions of the HUB Detroit and HUB Flint to help identify and promote positive trends in these cities. By the end of 2017, her collective publications reach exceeded 2.5 million impressions. Her company, Bridges Communications Group, Inc., produces award-winning collateral marketing materials, multicultural communications campaigns and special events.
