Nearly 600 Michigan middle and high school students demonstrated their engineering skills as teams from around the state converge at an annual bridge-building competition in Grand Rapids on May 1, 2018. Teams from grades 7 through 12 competed in the 10th annual Michigan Design and Build Bridge Challenge sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Students built miniature bridges using balsa wood, glue and string, which were tested for strength and design. Teams also made detailed presentations about their bridges before a panel of judges. The challenge is part of MDOT’s Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) program. TRAC’s ultimate goal is to encourage kids to pursue engineering and other science-related fields
