Business Veteran Advice

- Workforce diversification continues to present challenges for employers in managing employee relations. How employers respond to and investigate internal complaints of harassment, discrimination and other misconduct allegations can have a serious impact both legally and practically, affecting employee morale, productivity and workplace culture.

- Have you heard any of these statements recently? “We have cut all of our low performers. All we have left is our best people.” Or “Right now, people are feeling lucky just to have a job. That is their motivation.” Both of these statements are risky beliefs at best to use in guiding your daily decisions as a business leader.

Executive Conversations

- David Wood, “recovering actuary,” online businessman and life coach, provides his advice on creating a successful online business along with how it can positively change a person’s life. After all he should know, being the owner of 15 coaching Web sites, creator of a million-dollar online empire and a former actuary in New York for Fortune 100 companies.

- Kevin Weiss, president and CEO of Authors Solutions, Inc., looks forward to the changes coming to the industry of self-publishing. Weiss believes the industry, though controversial, is here to stay and will revolutionize writing and reading for the better. In fact, Weiss’ company thinks the new business card might just be the self-published book, which they say is giving employees, job hunters and business leaders an advantage over the competition.

Gen Y Advice

The classic responses of “there is so much going on at school. Not sure if I really have the time.” I hate that answer. College students are very caught up in the hectic environment of school and for good reason.

- What does living the dream mean to you? Are you using your imagination to figure out exactly what it is that you want and applying yourself directly to obtain it?

Opinions

- Did you ever take the time to ponder the power of change? The definition of the word “change” lists multiple meanings. Similarly, the power generated by change is multi-faceted. Changing the oil in your car regularly will prolong the engine life. Changing your hairstyle or type of clothing will transform your appearance.

- I was at an executive brainstorming meeting the other day where we were to introduce ourselves and talk about our greatest highlight and greatest challenge that we had in 2009. Of the various executives in attendance from various industries, almost every one claimed that not having enough time was their greatest challenge.
